The Bossa Nova, which means "The New Thing" is a musical genre with Brazilian roots that began in the late 1950’s. Stan Getz’s "The Girl From Ipanema" is is probably the most famous example of the bossa nova Brazilian music. The Bossa Nova has a rhythm based on Brazilian samba music which has origins from African slaves. The combination of the piano with guitar bridges the bossa nova into American jazz musical rhythms.

So, what instruments are used in Bossa Nova music? The bossa nova instruments include the nylon string acoustic guitar and piano. Bossa Nova percussion instruments are not necessary for a pure bossa nova, but a bossa nova beat may include drums and a samba tambourine. The voice sings in a soft spoken style.  Artists like Stan Getz also integrate Jazz Saxophone, Bass, Vibraphone, Drums and Symbols into the bossa nova instrument repertoire.
