Easy Piano Advice For Beginners And Novices

Sitting down to learn how to play the piano can be overwhelming. There is so much to learn and so many different ways of learning that some beginners never know where to start. Mastering the instrument takes years, but learning the basics can be quick, easy, and fun. Easy piano advice that focuses on the fundamentals prepares students to play music that was written by the masters.

A grand piano will have 88 keys. Each key represents a different note; however, there are only twelve notes on the keyboard. Each note is repeated in higher or lower octaves. Being able to name each note on the keyboard is the first step to knowing the instrument. The notes range from A to G. Most pianists are introduced first to middle C. Middle C is the fourth C on the keyboard and is usually thought of as the center of the instrument.

After learning the different note names, learning how to read music is paramount. The ability to read music allows students to learn any piece ever written. Skill level is the only limitation. Music is transcribed as a visual language and standardized in a way that allows composers to write music and musicians to play it.

After learning to read music, it is time to learn the scales. All music is based off of twelve major and minor scales. Each scale is a series of seven notes that are played sequentially. When looking at a new piece of music, the most fundamental thing that a player will look at is the key signature. The key signature tells the player which scale the piece is in. Learning these scales will make learning new music a much faster and easier process.

Daily practice, regardless of age or experience, is essential. Beginners should play at least one hour per day if not more. This allows the muscles in the hands and arms to develop and muscle memory to begin forming. How good a pianist plays is directly related to how much time they have spent practicing.

This easy piano advice is centered on good technique and fundamental musical knowledge. While it may not be as fun or impressive to most people, it is the pathway to mastering the instrument. Anyone can learn simple songs or melodies. Those who dedicate themselves to learning the piano and focus on having a solid foundation will have the ability to play advanced pieces much faster than beginners who start playing from a song book.
