Laying down a DJ Mix

Summary: If you want to be a DJ, understanding the basics of a DJ mix is the first step on your way to turntable stardom.

A good DJ will master the room’s energy. A good DJ mix will engage the crowd throughout the night and pace them with a continuous flow of music and sound. Learning the basics of a DJ mix is the first step to becoming a successful DJ.

What is a proper DJ mix? A DJ mix is essentially a sequence of musical or audio tracks that are mixed together to transition seamlessly from one track to another. There are a number of pieces of equipment used in a DJ performance including turntables, computer sound cards, a DJ mixer and other audio sources. The DJ mixer is used to help fade new tracks in and out.

Performing a mixset is more than just fiddling with equipment, though. DJs must have the intuitive ability to read a crowd and understand what music they want — or need — to hear to get their energy level

A DJ performance is interactive — disc jockey’s pick their tracks in response to what’s going on down on the dance floor. It is important for a DJ to have charisma and a real stage presence to win the crowd over.

However, if you want to be a good DJ, you have to have a firm grasp of the technical aspects of DJing. A great start is to master the basics of DJ mixing.

Basic techniques

For example, one of the first things you’ll learn is beat mixing. This is where a DJ alters the speed of a track to lock in the beat with another musical or audio track. This technique is used in every DJ performance, but is easiest to learn with house music because these tracks often have a long beat intro.

Once you master beat mixing, you’ll want to pick up pitch mixing. Pitch mixing is where you alter the pitch of a track to match the tune currently playing. This is easiest done with songs that start and stop with just beats.

Next is the classic sound of scratch mixing. When most folks think about DJs they think about someone pushing records to make the distinctive scratch noise. This is most commonly employed by hip-hop and rap DJs.

Once you have these basic DJ mix techniques down, you’ll be ready to move on to more sophisticated mixes.
