Adults And Piano Lessons

When an adult returns to the ‘learning environment’ of classes they require different teaching styles.  This can be seen in any type of adult learning scenario.  If you would like to verify that a good way is to inform an adult who is contemplating a new learning experience that they need to return to a classroom setting and then watch how they react.

Once adults are no longer part of the school and its systematic style of instruction they don’t typically have tolerance of sitting through formal lessons.  Even considering a formalized school setting brings an unenthusiastic response from adults.  The thought of reentering a school type setting does not receive a favorable reception with most adults because they were certain that school was a thing of the past.

Adults do, however, respond positively to an activity based course.  They are not interested in having to read and do a ton of research like they recall they had to do in a formal school setting.  In the case of music they don’t want to return to the seemingly endless hours of practice as they basically wander the wilderness of music alone and bored.

They respond favorably to a course that respects their time through utilization of well planned and segmented pieces that command their interest.  The word ‘interest’ is the operative word here.

A child who takes lessons and may be forced by a parent to practice…”hey junior, I’m paying that piano teacher to teach you to play and your teacher can’t practice for you…so get in there and PRACTICE”, to which junior goes off and does his ‘time’ in the dungeon of the practice room because he has no other choice.  Adults simply won’t respond in a positive manner to that type of prompting!

Adult learners don’t have a parent to make sure that they practice.  So the course of instruction for the adult must be ‘INTERESTING’ and ‘FUN’ if they are to put in the time necessary to succeed.

Here’s where true adult education courses become important.  Courses designed for adult learning meet certain requirements outlined above and in addition the add an additional piece.  They use learning techniques based on participative activity.  There is no secret for this other than the fact that people learn when they do it themselves.

Independent reviews on a site that is hosted by music educators is a great place to do your research into one of these courses.
