Alice in Chains is well known for grunge. Alice in Chains Dirt was the name of their second studio album. Here is more about both the group and the album.
The group got their start long before creating Alice in Chains Dirt. They formed in Seattle, Washington. The group played grunge with elements of heavy metal. They became popular in the 1990s. During the 1990s they sold over 14 million albums in the United States. They twice reached number one on the Billboard 200. 11 of their singles made it to the top. In addition, there were six Grammy nominations.
They were prolific even before Alice in Chains Dirt. They signed with Columbia records in 1989 and became a top priority for that label. Columbia couldn’t wait to release their first album. Facelift, that album, was released on August 21, 1990. It only rose as far as 42 on the Billboard 200. After six months only 40,000 copies had been sold. But after MTV featured a single from the album, it sold 400,000 copies in only six weeks. It was a huge success.
Drug abuse and depression is featured heavily in Alice in Chains Dirt. One of the band members had been heavily addicted to various drugs. He just completed rehab. When he came out of rehab he says that he went back to using heroin. The rumors are that many members of the band were on marijuana while recording
Much of Alice in Chains Dirt was written while the band was on the road touring. If you’ve ever been involved in a long road tour, you know how difficult that can be. Thus this album was much darker than the previous one. The bandits as they accumulated demons in the day and exercised those demons at night.
Alice in Chains Dirt album cover was the brain child of one of the band members. It included his girlfriend’s face. Everyone liked it. They finished the album in June. It made it as far as number six on the Billboard’s top 200. The album made the group quite famous. The album obtained multiple platinum and gold status.
Alice in Chains Dirt has become part of the history of music. Many people consider it a masterpiece.
