What jobs are out there for Guitarist/Musician?

I have been pondering on this for some time now. Since i am going to college pretty soon and i love music and i want to have a career in music and i play guitar, i play alot of jazz bossa nova and classical and also rock, so i was wondering what careers are out there for guitar, all i hear is if u are a guitarist u have to be in a rock band and make it big thats all and that’s it i don’t get it like if u see there are many jobs for violin and orchestra instruments but what other jobs are out there for guitar. I want to major in music and i have had already college level music theory in high school and in top all of my music classes but is that the end for me while the other instrument players at my school go off to play in orchestra and other stuff is that as far as guitar takes me or unless i make it big with a band. if u guys can help me out on this it would be awesome , tell of ur experience and what jobs are out there for guitarist/musician thx so much.

You ever hear the term, “starving musician”? There aren’t many jobs for a guitar player. Playing a gig like the other guy suggests isn’t going to net you any money. To do that, you need a band… with original material, or cover songs. It takes quite a long time to write or learn those songs… a year or two, depending on the style and how often you practice…. not to mention the time it takes to find capable musicians. Then, you have to book the shows. Who wants a band that nobody has ever heard of? NOBODY does, that’s who. Clubs/Bars only want bands that will bring people to the bar/club, and those bands are bands that have been around long enough to create a following…. so you have to take the crappiest of shows that pay you in either beer, as in 1 beer per member, or at the most $50 for gas… sure, every now and then you’ll get a cut of the door, if they even charge a cover charge, but again, with no following, no one will show up. Sure, there are clubs that people go to, no matter who’s playing, but these clubs either have big bands play, or you have to commit to selling a certain amount of tickets, and if you don’t sell them, you buy them… which is what we call “pay to play”, which sucks.

There are studio’s that need talented and knowledgeable guitar players, and the good ones can make quite a bit of money, but you have to be elite, and you have to know how to find these jobs. I can’t help you here, but I have heard about this from several people.

Last, you somehow write a hit record and become a rockstar.
