Building yourself a guitar? Things to consider
So, your obsessed with guitars to an almost unhealthy point – there the first and last thing you think about during the day. You get withdrawal symptoms every day you dont play and your living of tins of beans in order just to save the money to buy a new guitar. But now that you’ve considered building your own dream guitar – so just what work will go into building it?
- The cost. This isnt going to be cheap -you’ve got to consider the prices of the wood for the body and the neck, the pickups, the electronics if your building an electric guitar, this is going to be pricey for you. Also remember the specialist tools you are going to need to build your guitar.
- Practice. If you’ve never held wood cutting tools before, practice is really something you should be considering. You wont be great straight away, so dont start on expensive wood- let that come later when you’ve had some experience. By getting to grips with the tools and cutting on cheaper wood you’ll save time when you come to do it for real. Because once you get to the cutting part, you’ll be thankful that the practice paid off.
- Wiring. Primaily a point for the electric guitar builders out there, as once youve completed work on the body, you’ll get to the electrics. Getting electrocuted may become a factor once the guitar is built and you go to play it, so take extra care with wiring it. Get a experienced electrician to look over your work before you insert it into the guitar and ‘send it live’.
These are just a few things to consider, but if thats too much work you can always just buy electric guitars from these guys.
