Derek Riggs and Vince Locke -best of the beasts

Tags: ,

We all have our favourite album artwork that mean something to us, or reflect what the album stands for, or is just that damn awesome we had to buy the album. We look at two artists who had an impact on metal album artwork.

  • Cannibal Corpse and Vince Locke. No-one can deny that Locke’s artwork had a contribution towards Cannibal Corpses success. The gruesome artwork has basically helped ‘the corpse’ stand out from the legions of other death metal bands over the years and has even been banned in some countries -causing alternate covers to be created. The artwork goes hand in hand with the music, you know exactly what your getting with a Cannibal corpse album. He has toned it down for latest album ‘Evisceration plague’, but his artwork wasnt even shown on the cover of previous album ‘Kill’, which promoted outrage from Cannibal fans.
  • Derek Riggs- Iron Maiden. The classic Iron Maiden album was the first to feature then new vocalist Bruce Dickinson and it propelled Maiden onto a whole other level. You know that artwork had an impact of the sales: Eddie being controlled by the devil, who in turn, is being controlled by Eddie. Just who is in control: Eddie or the devil? The artwork was supposed to be for the Run to the hills single, but Maiden manager Rod Smallwood thought it was too good just to be a single. Riggs has since had Eddie labotomised, being a futuristic bounty hunter and missing the bottom half of his torso. Riggs has kept quiet with his Maiden work as we havent seen any artwork of his since the studio album ‘No prayer for the dying’. Please?
