Don’t Know Where to Start with Guitar Lessons?

Tags: , , , , ,

Starting guitar lessons for beginners can be a daunting task for some people. Learning the notes, strings, strumming, tablature, chords, tuning, and other basics can seem like an awful lot to master. After that, it all becomes much more complex when you have to factor in the distinct feel and soul of the songs you play.

This is why it is essential for a beginner to get lessons on how to play the guitar. Learning to play different songs and different styles of music is easier to learn from a listening and watching a teacher (either in person or on a video) than learning from a book.

As such, there are multiple ways for a beginner to learn about how to play the guitar:

Get a private teacher

This was the most common method of learning to play the guitar for beginners before the availabilty of electronic lessons, affordable video and computers with internet access.

A student will be able to receive lessons custom-made to fit his or her needs under the tutelage of a private teacher. An experienced guitar teacher is a very effective and inspiring way for beginners to learn to play guitar.

There is a drawback to this intensive learning method, however. First and foremost is the money involved, as tutoring can run up to a cool hundred dollars or more a month. In some towns it is hard to even find an accomplished and experienced teacher (or it’s hard to find one that is affordable). If you are busy or if the teacher has few available time-slots, scheduling lessons can be an issue.

Subscribe to online lessons

An alternative to getting a private teacher is to subscribe to guitar lessons via the Internet.

The lessons can either be similar to or totally different from getting a private teacher. Pre-recorded videos that use step-by-step “watch and learn” lessons can feel like you are in a classroom with a teacher. A good example of online video lessons are the courses for learning to play guitar from Jamorama. (For a review, see Jamorama Acoustic Guitar.)

If you choose the former, then you can expect rates to be slightly less compared to hiring a private teacher, but the lessons will be a lot less interactive and customized because of the virtual limitations. On the other hand, the online lessons don’t cost as much as private lessons but you can miss out on having a personal relationship with a teacher/mentor. You would need to have an Internet connection and a computer capable of playing the streaming videos (or downloading them).

Buy guitar lesson DVDs

A third choice for lessons are those on digital video (DVDs).

These are similar to video-taped online lessons, but come packaged into DVDs instead. You have more control over lessons on DVDs since you can watch and learn with or without a computer (and no internet connection is required). Sometimes DVDs just play in a better audio and video quality and are easier to stop, start or rewind. These are affordable and often come with printed materials, as well as, recorded video tutorials. (See a review of Learn and Master Guitar.)

When it comes to the drawbacks of lessons on DVD format, the only real disadvantages are the lack of human interaction during teaching and being unable to move beyond the realm of the basics. The finer points of becoming a good guitar player may require human interaction to steer you in the right direction, and a DVD lesson cannot always do that for you. Some of the best DVD courses include support from guitar teachers or advanced students, email support and community forums for sharing your progress and asking questions. One of the better parts of a good learning program includes the ability to contact the teacher, have contact with other guitar players, and to upload videos of yourself in order to get constructive criticism, feedback or encouragement.

So there you have it, the three primary means to learn guitar lessons for beginners. Make your choice wisely, and you’ll be strumming to the beat in no time at all!

  1. There is one more where an instructor teaches the beginner over an online learning platform. It includes video lessons and personalized feedback on assignments that students record back into the browser via webcam. All the benefits of online 24/7 content and a personal relationship.

This platform is open to any instructor or school who wants to use it. Here is a class coming online this fall for Blue Bear Music School in San Francisco. http://tinyurl.com/mpkvkd
