No string lasts forever though, and old strings will sound flat, look grimy and be difficult to tune; they should be changed just before they reach that kind of state.

The fretboard can also be kept clean when cleaning the strings. A soft cloth run over both sides of the strings will also serve to clean any lingering marks from the fretboard, keeping it looking sharp.

In conclusion, it should also be remembered that playing an instrument is the best way to keep it looking and sounding good. No one should ever mistake a little wear and tear for neglect, and getting out your black acoustic guitar and playing is much better for it than leaving it to gather dust in a corner.
