How To Play Piano Chords Easily

Tags: , , ,

Look at the piano. Notice the black and white keys. The black ones are the most noticeable. With just a little keyboard knowledge and some light music theory anyone can learn how to play piano chords.

When looking at the instrument it is easy to notice that there are two groups of black keys. One group has two and the other has three. This configuration repeats in a pattern. The keys have names. They are named by the first seven letters of the alphabet and are called notes. Their names are A through G. The white keys are called naturals and are named with these letters. The black keys use the same names but are what are called sharp and flat notes.

The fingers of both hands are numbered, one to five beginning with the thumbs. On the piano find the two black keys. The C note is the key to the left of the two black ones. Place the fifth finger or little finger of the left hand on the C note left of the middle of the instrument. Now gently rest the other four fingers on the ones to the right of the C note.

Repeat this movement with the right hand but place the thumb or the first finger on the C to the right of the middle of the instrument. Now the fingers of both hands will be resting on the notes C, D, E, F, and G. Make sure the C note is under the thumb of the right hand and the little finger of the left.

A chord consists of three or more notes played at the same time or in sequence. With your hands in the position above, press down fingers five, three and one on both hands. Now you have a C major chord. Perform them together, then do one hand first and the other hand second.

The F note can be found by locating the grouping of three black notes. The F is the white one just to the left of these three. Place your fingers in the same configuration as the C chords and perform the F major chord the same way by playing them together and alternating.

One more chord is needed it is the G major. The G note is just to the right of the F. Using the one three five fingers, play G major, just like the other chords and repeat the exercise.

Now you have what is called a progression of chords. This term means, chords in performed in a certain sequence. Now you are capable of performing a song in the key of C. Practice them in order, C, F, and G, add lyrics and play a song.
