Being a music teacher offers flexibility, fulfillment and enjoyment. Anyone of whatever age, can aspire for a music teacher job and not expect to be confined to the four walls of a classroom. Music teachers can try private tutoring as part time or additional work and conduct these outside of the school, preferably in homes of the students. The basic foundation that is needed by a music teacher is the love of music, knowledge of the musical instruments and also keen observation of details specifically the basic principles of music.

A music teacher must be familiar with the mechanics of melody, beat and tempo. Knowing at least basic skills in playing an instrument is also necessary since the teaching will be more interactive and practical if an instrument is used. For starters, a music teacher candidate can learn bongos, maracas and tambourines. For more intermediate students, one can then have lessons covering different kinds of instruments including the string, woodwind, percussion and bass instruments.

Additionally, music teachers are also flexible since they can handle either preparatory, elementary, high school or collegiate level students. Teaching in levels higher than these three may require higher education but for the lower levels basic appreciation and background in music are sometimes sufficient.

From the basic appreciation of music, lessons that a music teacher job covers include notes and rests, time signatures, musical styles and other music technicalities. Being very particular about timing and beats when playing an instrument is also necessary in addition to having an understanding in musical scores and pieces.

A music teacher is generally expected to be able to handle all the curiculum being offered by the music school. This also includes being bound with the time frame required for each subject. There may also be additional trainings and researches that a teacher is required to do and complete. Private tutors on the other hand, can set their own time. Most of the time, they usually match it with the free time of their students.

When you have become a professional music teacher, you can also be a member of an orchestra, band or choir. They should practice and share their skills most of the time in order to be updated of the latest music trends and also further enhance their capabilities.

Music Teacher Qualifications:

Most of the time, a bachelor’s degree in music education is necessary to become a music teacher. For the part timers or those not qualified to teach full time, a formal certification is the normal prerequisite. Proficiency in at least one instrument is also preferred most of the time. For college levels, stricter rules of even finishing a master’s degree might be required. Being involved in research papers and other music initiatives may also be necessary to be eligible.

Music teacher job posts are available both in newspaper and online. It will not be quick or easy to get the higher paying music teacher jobs but the process will surely be very enjoyable, fulfilling and informative. Most of the time, it is not about the money, it is more of the experience and the satisfaction .
