Need more people at your gigs? Start promoting them

Tags: ,

It can be very hard work trying to promote your gigs as an unsigned band. Your friends are gonna be coming down in the beginning, but dont expect them to keep coming down gig after gig. Here’s afew ways to try and advertise your gig.

  • Postering the event. A proven way to promote your gig. Basically involves you running around town and putting up a poster about your gig wherever will let you. Music shops, colleges, rehearsal studios, newsagents, pubs and other venues are alwasy good places to get the message out there. But make sure you check with the manager/ bar staff before putting anything up, some places can be very funny about people putting up posters. Some councils will fine you for putting up posters in the street without permits and then fine the venue -so remember to check when you do it. Which wont go down to well with venue owners.
  • Flyering. Producing a load of flyers and standing out in the street may not sound very appealing, but even if it gets afew more people down it’ll be worth it to spread the name. Be wary that not everyone is going to want a flyer, so dont be too pushy, and even some that take the flyer will put it straight into a bin without a second thought, so it can be disheartening at first but keep at it.
  • The Internet. {The power of the Internet has helped smaller bands greatly, advertise your gigs on many different related forums, Myspace, Facebook groups}{The internet has been a godsend to bands, so advertise on different forums, Myspace, Facebook and anywhere else you can think of}Cyberspace has allowed bands to check in contact with their fans more easily. You can promote you gig via social networks and fourms. Getting to know some of the poeple on these forums can also open up new oppotunities and get these people themselves interested in helping your band out, and even coming down. The social pages usually have features to create events and invite people down. Not all the people are going to turn up, but at this point its about letting everyone know and slowly building up support. Be aware people may say they are turning up only for them not to, so dont take it too personally if people who say there turning up dont.
  • Putting your gig in the local gig listings. Those free papers with gig listings in? Somebody reads them, so getting your gig in there is more exsposure about it.
