Rock Bands Finding Coaches

Tags: , , ,

Coaching is like a new movement, and it’s now becoming a big component of the music business. It seems like every music group now has a band manager, or is in the process of searching for one.  The truth is most local bands do not realize how the music business functions. A lot of bands don’t realize what their pay is primarily based on or even how to get their band on great concerts. In actuality there are not many beneficial resources explaining these areas to local groups and band coaching will assist with this need.

There are hundreds of concert clubs and dozens of company’s coordinating and producing local concerts these days. Even though groups are being asked to help bring their followers out to their shows they now have more opportunity to make even more income than ever before, if they just understand how to get paid.

One challenge is that most of these bands think that their pay is primarily based on how well they perform or how good they write their songs. Still, bands are not compensated based on the good quality of their shows and promoters do not pay band for their talent or their performance. Frankly any club that did compensate artists that way would surely go out of business. A club’s revenue does not go up depending on how great a show may be. A club’s income only fluctuates based on the number of people that attend that particularshow.

It doesn’t matter if you’re playing in a small concert club or a in stadium. You will get paid out based on the number of folks that wish to see you perform. This is how Keane, Metallica, U2, and all unknown local groups are paid. Make sure you realize that concert clubs like The Curtain Club, do not have built in crowds. Even a club like DNA Lounge San Francisco doesn’t have a built in crowd. When was the last time you went to a concert club on a whim, to see who was playing? In all probability never!

Now there are venues and individuals that do pay bands for talent and not their draw. For instance wedding planners pay groups based on overall performance alone. They don’t want you to have a draw; in fact they will insist that you arrive alone. Corner bars also from time to time pay out groups based on performance alone, but then you’ll normally need to cater to their crowd and play covers or a certain type of music that their customers appreciate. There are certain situations where groups are paid based on performance alone, but if you’re playing in a concert venue and you wish to be compensated then you’re going to want to bring people.

These are the types of issues a band manager can help your group understand. When you understand this concept you can make enough money to pay out your manager and still have some left over. If you don’t currently have a coach I suggest that you acquire one.
