Singing Performance Tips
Knowing the proper behavior on stage is critical to giving your best live performance. With that in mind, try to follow these tips:
The Practice Run
Make sure you’ve rehearsed with the band. Before you go on stage, have a minimum of one dress rehearsal. When you do your final dress rehearsal, sing from memory.
Outfit
Make sure you choose a good outfit, because this can determine the outcome of your show. Get used to your outfit before you step on stage. You want to be sure that you can move in it and breathe without feeling constricted.
Walking out onto the stage
After you know where to stand it’s a good idea to practice walking into place. Walking across the stage is much more difficult than you would think. You want to stop in place but also find your posture as you stop. Do your best to keep your posture as you walk to your chosen position.
Keep the speaker turned away from you
Singing with a band can be really cool, but the first time can be a bit confusing. You’re going to have some trouble hearing yourself if the speakers are turned away. For the first few times you could ask to have a speaker turned towards you. The problem is that bands play loudly, and a speaker can be distracting if you’re not used to it. If there is an instrument that plays the melody line, make sure you learn to pick it out.
Smile to your audience
When you go on stage, smile at the audience. Even if you are nervous, a smile, will make you appear more confident. Your smile needs to look genuine even if you’re nervous and don’t want to be on the stage.
Acknowledge your audience
When singing in a concert, knowing whether to acknowledge your audience or stick to your own little world can be tricky. Singers won’t always sing in a small place. To get a feel for whether to include the audience as part of your song, watch and learn from the seasoned pros.
Don’t let distractions put you off
In a normal concert there can be a lot of distractions. People can do many things in an audience, such as coughing or even leaving early. People in the audience often don’t consider how this distracts the performer. When you practice at home you might want to intentionally stage some distractions. Get a friend to try and distract you while you practice ignoring them and concentrating on your performance.
What to do with your hands
Make sure you don’t do anything strange with your hands while you are performing; keep them at your sides if you can. It may not be the most interesting place for them but you’re probably better off erring on the side of calm and still. If you gesture, then make a complete gesture, because anything incomplete or half done will make you look nervous. Clasping your hands in front of you is another option for your hands.
I hope these performance tips were helpful to you. Of course before you present yourself to the crowds, you’ll need to do some work on your singing voice.
