Learning The Drums Ain’t Like Rock Band
This might not be something you want to admit to, but have you ever caught yourself playing the air drums to a song on your iPod while walking to work or on the bus? Do you always reach out for the drumsticks whenever you and your friends are playing Rock Band? Do you dream of your 15 minutes of fame while you do a 10 min drum solo on YouTube? Well I hate to break it to you, especially since you probably don’t realize it, but you have the DRUM BUG. Air drummers from all over the world have this and once you have it, there is no way you are even going to get rid of it. Why would you want to?
Beginner drum lessons have always been very expensive. Not only are the lessons expensive but buying a beginner drum kit isn’t cheap either. A good set can easily cost more then $1000 dollars. So what are your options?
Well first of all, never pay full retail price on a drum set. Take some time to look at the classified both online at sites such as craigslist and your local newspaper to find a good used kit. You should find a pretty good starter set for a lot less then what you would pay for it at retail. There are a lot of kids and teens these days who give up on playing the drums when they realize it’s not as easy as doing it in Rock Band. Be sure to find a drum kit you can pick up locally since they are large and paying for shipping often defeats the purpose of buying used.
The next thing to save a few bucks is to purchase a drum instruction dvd. There are several of dvd courses available with professionals walking you through the basic beats and teaching you techniques that would cost you hundreds of dollars if done with private lessons.
These tips are the basics you’ll need to start learning the drums. The last and most important tip, if you live in an apartment, is to invest in good soundproofing. Nothing will make this experience less enjoyable then an angry neighbor hitting the wall or worse knocking on your door.
