The Magic Of The Violin
Selecting an instrument is like selecting a partner. You will have a love relationship with it for your entire life.
You better choose an instrument that you adore.
And the violin is such a lot of an instrument to be loved. Everyone has their own love, and their own preference. My preference goes to the violin.
A violin is a bit like an extension of your body. It is built to be held. It is made to be embraced. It is meant to move along with you while you play it and to be the means of your expression.
When you play the violin, you do something that is similar to singing. Being able to change the pitch steadily, simply by moving your fingers around, permits you to have that intimate feeling that you simply can’t have with other fixed note instruments like the piano or the guitar.
The violin is just more of an organic instrument.
The violin pitch range
Violin pitch range goes from G3 all of the way up to C8, the highest note of a modern piano. The highest 2 octaves are sometimes produced as harmonics, so that the actual range is a bit below that.
Consider that a voice range is usually around 2 octaves, shifted either lower or higher depending on the voice type.
A Bass type voice goes from E2 to E4. A Soprano from C4 to C6.
Therefore a voice pitch range is littler than the violin range. That is one way to look at it. Violin is empowerment! A violin empowers you to say something, to sing something, in a voice-like manner. Nevertheless it does so by magnifying your capability of expression. You get a larger pitch range. And you get all those amazing timbre colors you can do only with a violin.
A violin is voice on steroids
The miracle of the violin
If I was to consider an animal that resembles and sounds like a violin, I’d think of a pussy-cat. A kitty, when it sings, outputs a sound that’s in a way a bit similar to the violin. A pussy-cat does express itself too.
A piano, finally, might be more similar to a dog, I’d venture.
And yes…the shape. A violin is like the lustier of bodies. The body of a lady. The most interesting of the instruments. No question why everybody is magnetically entranced by a violin. It is simply the most engaging.
What about the bow?
You don’t just play a violin with your hands. You play it with this extension of your hands that’s the bow. It’s another spellbinding item, made with horsehair, that impresses those vibrations to the cords in a soft enough way so they vibrate without shrieking (if you’re an ok player, of course). Of course, you have to pick the right violin sizes.
Therefore that is the violin. An enchanting instrument. A miraculous partner. A magical buddy.
I adore the violin. It’s obvious from what I wrote. But I am pretty sure the same might be written for any other instrument, by their own lover!
