Ukulele History
History
The history of Ukuleles dates back to the 19th Century.
The unique styling comes from an instrument called the Cavaquinho. This was carried into Hawaii by the Portugese.
In the early 20th Century it started to gain popularity in other parts of the USA and it that’s where it took off from.
Uses
When people think of the Ukulele they often associate the sound that it makes and the style of music with Hawaii.
With it’s easy to play 4 string action and nylon strings, the Ukulele is much easier to learn the starts on than a normal guitar and quite versatile in the variety of sounds and music genre’s that you can create.
With that familiar sound that commonly inspires relaxing easy listening music however you only need to have a listen to some of the concert level Ukulele performances to know the true capability of this truly amazing creation.
Types
Surprisingly there are quite a number of different types of Ukuleles however there are 4 main sizes and tunings.
- Soprano
- Concert
- Tenor
- Baritone
The soprano, concert and tenor Ukuleles have the classic tuning of G/C/E/A with the G string (string at the top) being of a higher pitch than others, this is called reentrant tuning and gives the Ukulele it’s classic ‘rosy’ sound.
Different tuning types are the D Tuning – A/D/F#/B and Low G Tuning – D/G/B/E.
Prices
Prices do vary greatly on Ukuleles just as they do with normal Guitars and the same rules generally apply with price being relative to quality. One company that is doing a great job of bringing the Ukulele to the people is Ukulele Sales. A relatively new company Ukulele Sales is taking on the market as their own game.
“Prices start from $50 and go through to well over $1000″ the owner of Ukulele Sales said. “We are only stocking the a small range at the moment however we can get almost any type in for you and all of our prices include postage so that there are no surprises”. Ukulele Sales may not be the cheapest, the oldest or the biggest but there is one thing for sure and that is their case it is a ‘watch this space’
